Dr. Jens Richter

A Physicist in Mind, Developer by Heart, Engineer by Passion.

// about

About

Born in Dresden. Raised in Leverkusen. In Aachen I studied physics and computer science, then earned a doctorate (PhD) in electrical engineering.

Now

I live in Eschweiler near Aachen, with my wife, my son, and our dog.

Goal

Solve as many interesting problems as possible, subject to the constraint that something usable comes out at the end.

// now / work

Now / Work

I'm CEO of DNA Evolutions, and still work with source code.

We build JOpt, a route and tour optimization engine written in Java. It turns chaotic real-world logistics (vehicles, drivers, time windows, skills, hard constraints, multi-day planning) into feasible, optimal tours. Available natively in Java and as a Spring WebFlux REST service.

Something has to decide who drives where and when, without breaking the rules. That something is a solver. And I build it.

Topics

  • vehicle routing
  • time windows
  • skills & constraints
  • multi-day planning
  • native Java
  • Spring WebFlux REST
  • optimization
  • quantum computing
  • AI
  • machine learning
  • workforce scheduling

Research

Doctorate: Dr.-Ing. in Electrical Engineering, RWTH Aachen, 2018.

In plain terms: I built tiny glass rings on a silicon chip that trap light and let it loop millions of times. That's the basis for very precise optical measurements and for optical frequency combs, essentially rulers made of light. Programming and quantum physics were my daily companions.

Thesis

Ultra-high-Q inverted silica microtoroid resonators monolithically integrated into a silicon photonics platform.

Topics

  • silicon photonics
  • ultra-high-Q microresonators
  • optical frequency combs
  • optical characterization
  • cleanroom
  • SEIRA
  • dark field
  • FTIR
